The Lancer/Ace Paperback Series

Under the direction of L. Sprague de Camp and Lin Carter, Lancer published the first comprehensive paperback series of Conan stories, which compiled the existing Robert E. Howard stories and pastiches together with new pastiches, within a timeline devised by de Camp to form a complete account of Conan's life.

Lancer went out of business about 1974 before publishing the final volume, 11th according to de Camp's chronology, which was subsequently published by Prestige. Prestige reprinted all the other Lancer titles and, as Ace distributed (and subsequently reprinted) the Prestige editions, this series is often called the Lancer/Ace series. All featured cover art by Frank Frazetta, except Freebooter, Wanderer, Aquilonia and Isles which featured cover art by John Duillo (Lancer) or Boris Vallejo (Prestige/Ace).

The Lancer paperbacks were reprinted several times. The covers of the various printings change slightly every so often in the series. All 12 volumes were reprinted several times by Ace in the USA and by Sphere in the UK.

This series includes all the original Howard stories, including those left unpublished in his lifetime, and incorporates Howard's fragments and outlines. However, de Camp and Carter heavily edited much of the material, substantially rewriting some stories and completing stories that were not in finished form. They also rewrote several of Howard's non-Conan stories, mostly historical exotica situated in the Levant at the time of the Crusades, to turn them into Conan yarns. They also added their own wholly original pastiches.

Volumes 6, 10, 11 and 12 of the series don't contain a word by Howard. Of the thirty-five stories in the other eight volumes, nineteen were published or completed by Howard during his lifetime, but with an undetermined amount of new edits; ten are "collaborations" rewritten from other complete manuscripts or completed from his incomplete manuscripts, fragments or synopses; and six are the sole work of de Camp and Carter. The Millennium Volumes

As part of its "Fantasy Masterworks" series, Millennium, an imprint of Victor Gollancz, published The Conan Chronicles volumes 1 and 2 in 2000 and 2001, respectively, which were released only in Great Britain. The goal of "The Conan Chronicles" was to use all original Howard texts. However, editor Stephen Jones was put under the gun to get the books done as soon as possible, and ended up using some L. Совсем нет, английский у меня технический, а худ. лит читаю с переменным успехом, местами норм, местами без словаря никак. Все это читал на русском, издавалось "Азбукой". А на англ. собираю скорее для коллекции, а так же бывает хочется отдельные места в оригинале посмотреть, т.к. переводы у нас были еще те...

На самом деле с практикой общий смысл начинает улавливаться довольно легко и за каждым непонятным словом в словарь можно не лазить. Кроме того, заглядывание в словарь обогощает собственный словарный запас, т.е. язык постепенно учится.
А как еще учатся языки?

Купил "Брана Мак Морна" от Del Rey в виде электронной книги. Отличное издание (с картинками :D :D :D ), включает также "Королей Ночи", которые "кроссовером" с Куллом.

Так вот вопрос: оно кроме меня кому надо? В том смысле, что если да, то буду биться над взломом пароля, если нет...
В том виде как есть выкладывать стрёмно, да и бесполезно: печатать нельзя, копировать тоже, требует активировать акробат ридер... (сволочи буржуйские :D )

Мда... Защита серьезная. Книгу можно открыть только с того компа, с которого она была куплена, так что я ее даже не открыл. <_< А взломать все это можно было только в старых версиях где-то за 2001-ый год, и опять же только с того компа, с которого книга была куплена... Для новых версий методов взлома найти не удалось... Так что PrintScreen, похоже, пока единственный выход. %)

Нашел еще Conan and the Spider God по очень смешной цене для наладонника (бесплатную выдержку из нее перекопировать в ворд удалось без проблем), только они почему-то деньги с карточки не снимают. Не понял в чём загвоздка...

С сегодняшнего дня я начинаю в первом сообщении этой темы постепенно выкладывать имеющиеся в наличии англоязычные издания. Идея состоит в том, чтобы собрать не просто отдельные тексты, а именно полные издания. Это особенно актуально для изданий Говарда, т.к. для некоторых произведений наберется по несколько разных редакций. Зная, с каким изданием имеешь дело, не составит труда выяснить, что за редакция в нем опубликована. (Когда наберется более-менее приличная коллекция, она будет перенесена в библиотеку сайта.)

Обращаю внимание, что в серии Lancer произведения расположены в порядке хронологии (по де Кампу), но при первом издании сами книги выходили в ином порядке (см. год первого издания в квадратных скобках), поэтому на обложке "Conan the Adventurer" значится "VOLUME ONE OF THE COMPLETE CONAN", на обложке "Conan" - "VOLUME FIVE OF THE COMPLETE CONAN" и т.д. Но при переиздании в Ace тома уже были пронумерованы согласно хронологии, в таком порядке я их и помещаю.

Там нет последней главы, а вместо нее кусок из "Часа Дракона". К сожалению, исправленного варианта никто не выкладывал.

Был бы на Амазоне в этой книге сёрч инсайд - можно было бы помучиться, по абзацам вытащить. А так, боюсь, единственный вариант покупать книжку и сканировать последние страницы. Что нерентабельно.

Да, еще. С "Куллом" ерунда получилась. Они его настолько защитили, что он в конечном итоге окончательно пропал. Файл есть, а открыть нельзя больше: после переинсталяции операционки я превратился в другого пользователя. И на сайте, где покупал израсходован лимит скачивания. Поленился в свое время попринтскринить, вот и получил.
Так что до лучших времен.

У меня, оказывается, уже несколько месяцев лежат оба тома, скачал и даже не посмотрел что. Единственное, что в отличие от первого тома это будет html и без иллюстраций.

Conan the Conqueror от Lancer я не нашел. Т.е. на самом деле у меня есть несколько файлов с ним, но нет никаких оснований однозначно полагать, что скан делался с издания Lancer/Ace. Т.к. Conan the Conqueror (он же The Hour of the Dragon) есть в других изданиях, выкладывать текст неизвестного происхождения я смысла не вижу. Если будет найден скан с какими-нибудь указаниями на то, что он сделан с издания Lancer, тогда выложу его в серии.

"The rest of the fire was turned to marble"
У меня есть два перевода, в одном:
"Языки пламени со звоном осыпались на пол, точно осколки разбитого стекла. А те, что не разбились, застыли, неожиданно отвердев и остыв, - бессильные изваяния зла."
В другом просто:
"Языки огня прекратили свою пляску."
Про превращение в мрамор нет ни слова. То ли "turned to marble" от "Часа Дракона"?

Чего-то не могу понять с изданием от Millennium, на Howard Works в описании к книгам сказано
The goal of THE CONAN CHRONICLES was to use
all original Howard texts. However, editor Stephen Jones was put under the gun to get the books done as soon as possible, and ended up using some L. Sprague deCamp texts.
Но если смотреть на HW сами произведения, то они в этих изданиях не отнесены к отредактированным де Кампом. По информации с conan.com и википедии там неотредактированные версии. :unsure:

Добавил серию Bantam. Вся серия была переиздана в Ace и в Tor. Причем в Tor несколько раз. Я ее объединю с переизданиями и тогда выложу "Conan and the Spider God", он есть и не ищется.

Добавил также серию Ace 1978-1981 годов. Из нее "Conan: The Treasure of Tranicos" ищется только полностью, со вступлением и двумя статьями де Кампа. А так это та же версия "Сокровищ Траникоса", что в серии Lancer/Ace. "Conan: The Flame Knife" не ищется вообще, как я понял, там нет даже никаких доп. материалов, добавил только для полноты картины.

Так что "Liberator" и трилогия Кнаака пока есть только потенциально. По-идее, надо бы и "Бога-паука" как-нибудь заново сделать: теперь для palm-овских книг есть способ перегонки в нормальный формат без файнридера (и тех ошибок, что он делает). Но это уже совсем призрачные планы.

Меня, кстати, крайне интересует первая редакция "The Black Stranger" де Кампа/дел Рея. Издавалась в журнале Fantasy Magazine за март 1953 под названием "The Black Stranger" и в книге "King Conan" изд-ва Gnome Press в 1953 под названием "The Treasure of Tranicos". Примечательна тем, что по сравнению с последующей редакцией представляет собой сокращенную версию и содержит в начале четыре абзаца, добавленных дел Реем (от слов "Count Valenso" до "Writhing again").
Понимаю, что маловероятно найти эту версию в электронном виде, но если вдруг :), то дайте мне знать.

Да не будут под фильм это печатать. Максимум переиздадут готовые переводы. Как не печатали книги серии "Age of Conan" с выходом игрушки.
Ситуация девяностых, когда такое можно было издавать стотысячными тиражами не повторится. Массовому читателю это уже не нужно, дай бог, если Говарда нормально распродадут.

Второе - и главное - оно уже никому не нужно и на Западе. Идет тенденция к чистке говардовских текстов от чужой редактуры, а к пастишам всё больше отношение как к максимум любопытным поделкам.

Для чего? Ну наверное для всех желающих. :) Так же, как создаются тематические сайты, делаются сканы текстов, наполняются библиотеки и прочее...

Что касается переводов Говарда, то по-моему это будет намного сложнее. Во-первых, там по объему будет больше. Во-вторых, если любительский перевод Тертлдава всех устроит, то по переводам Говарда будет сломано миллион копий, я уверен. И на их редактуру уйдет времени может даже больше, чем на перевод.

Ну другой вариант - коллективное решение. Представь себе постановку принципиального вопроса: "Хайбория" или "Гибория" в новом переводе. Правильным будет однозначно второе, но если мнение приверженцев сложившийся традиции принимать равнозначным, то убеждать их придется до второго пришествия. То же самое с привычными, но неверными "Вендией" и "Хорайей".

В html-версии неверно автоматически распознавалась кодировка текста, я прописал кодировку явно в коде страницы и выложил html-версию, т.к. в doc-версии не вставились картинки, можно, конечно было расставить, но у нас все равно большая часть книг на английском в html...

Можно не копипастить, а конвертить, тогда проблем с форматированием текста быть не должно. :)

Дело в том, что все книги, найденные в электронном виде, я лично привожу к единому для себя формату .docx (в плане чтения с КПК и малого размера файлов ему нет равных, ИМХО).

Вот и здесь озадачился вопросом конвертирования выложенных книг в форматы .doc и .docx, а потому и поднял сей вопрос.

Я тут успел за пару лет свою персональную библиотеку электронных книг наполнить более, чем 5-ю тысячами книг... Эх... В данном случае экономия места уже весьма важна, особенно, если книги эти читаются в основном с КПК...

Касательно оформления - это просто черновой вариант был, созданный за 30-40 минут. Любые придирки тут только приветствоваться будут )) :)

Просто как то неудобно было выкладывать только "голый" текст.
А иллюстрации тематические были... Хотя, если они не к месту, можно и убрать их, для придания большей строгости книге.

Так это чистый фанфик (т.е. сетевое творчество) или это где-то всё-таки издавалось?

Германик, На счёт издания ничего не могу поведать, поскольку "содрал" с англоязычного форума у участника с приведённым ником, поэтому (а также немного "глянув по диагонали") и классифицировал "фанфиком".

As the full moon rose in the starlit sky,
And the winds roared madly down the glen,
I caught the gleam in a fey maid’s eye,
And fled from the wild wolf’s den.


THE YOUNG TRAVELER gazed apprehensively around him as he strode through the dense woodland. He was no coward, but the gloomy winding trail through the close-packed trees unnerved him. Above, the intertwining branches swayed, blotting out the moonlight, and the leaves soughed and rustled like a thousand ghosts in conclave.

The traveler strode out of the woods and onto a wild windswept heath. The moon rose high and full in the midnight sky, etching all in spectral splendor. Across the grassy heath were patches of gorse and heather, and their scent on the blustering breeze rose to his brain like a heady liquor after the solemn dankness of the woods. The traveler’s gaze took in the sweeping outline of a great hill in the distance that rose to a smooth crest, upon which was set a ring of somber dolmens. A tiny fire flickered at the center of that ring, and the traveler muttered a bewildered oath. Who else would be abroad at night in this wild place?

The traveler ran toward the hill. His long stride ate up the distance as he loped across the heath with pantherine grace. His fur cloak, trews and boots, the broad sword and poniard on his wide belt, were those of a Northman, seeming somehow incongruous upon the powerful frame of this young black-haired warrior. He was at one with the wilds, his blue eyes fierce with the exultation of exertion.

The traveler slowed to a cautious walk as he approached the base of the hill. His deep chest rose and fell, but the long run seemed not to have drained his vast reservoir of vitality to any appreciable degree. He set a huge scarred hand upon the hilt of his sword and ascended warily to the crest of the hill.

At the center of the silent ring of dolmens a small campfire flickered in a shallow fire pit rimmed with stones. The firelight licked luridly at the rune carved faces of the dolmens, which seemed now to the traveler like sullen giants gathered for a feast. A small lean to, offering some protection from the elements, had been constructed between two of the dolmens, and though the camp seemed to have been recently abandoned, the traveler sensed its occupant was still close by. As this thought crossed his mind, the traveler heard a movement and looked up to see someone step from the darkness into the firelight.

It was a woman who stood there with the firelight dancing on her beautiful face and wild blue wayward eyes. She had black hair, like the travelers; seemingly born of the same race. She strolled towards him fearlessly, and his eyes roved with fierce appreciation over the full breasts, narrow supple waist and broad hips beneath her simple fawn colored tunic. She made no attempt to draw about her the long cloak which cascaded from her shoulders, apparently as oblivious to the chill wind that stirred her garments, as she was to the burning gaze of the traveler. She seemed to be, like him, a scion of the wilderness.

"What brings you to Morwen’s camp, o stranger? You are garbed like the wolves of the north, yet you are clearly not of the Aesir nor Vanir."

"My name is Conan, a Cimmerian," stated the youth, "and I have come from the north. I marched with the Rig-Jarl Hjorl, and we spilled red blood in tides upon the snow, where the blades and axes of the Aesir flamed and thundered, shattering the shields of the Vanir."

"No whim of fate has brought you to my hearth." She moved up close to him and smiled as she ran her hands over his chest and heavy arms; she traced with her fingers the scars of battle that crossed his iron frame. "You are forged of steel and blood, in the flames of war. I have sung my song on the winds for such a one as you, and the Godess heard my call. She has sent a fit mate for Morwen."

Conan narrowed his eyes at her presumption, but the sight and the scent of her was like a fire in his veins, and he readily assented when she slipped into his embrace. He kissed her fiercely, and drank of her own wild kisses. He laid one hand upon her breast, the other slipped inside her tunic and around her supple waist, to caress her back and draw her to him.

"Crom!" The Cimmerian cursed, and threw the woman from him. She spun with lithe grace, facing him from beyond the fire with a wolfish smile upon her lips.

"How is this?" she asked mockingly. "You are a man among men, but yet not man enough for a woman of the Tuatha de Cernunos?"

Conan swore a vehement oath at the name of that heathen brood, then backed away from the firelight.

"If I cannot taste of your love," spoke Morwen quietly across the flames, a feral gleam in her eyes, "then at least I can taste of your flesh!"

Then the youth, Conan, turned and fled. Morwen’s laughter sounded behind him.

The blood pounded wildly in Conan’s brain as he ran down the hill and across the heath in the moonlight. The superstitious dreads of his people filled his mind with fearful images of the Children of Cernunos. Nor was his fear ill-founded.

Conan stopped and glanced back to see a huge black shape slink from between the dolmens and lope down the hill. Then he turned and ran on across the heath.

The Cimmerian knew that in spite of all his speed the infernal creature would gain upon him long before he reached the sanctuary of the treeline. As he ran he cast about for a place to turn at bay. He saw a small hillock crowned with limestone, and his boots found footing on the stone. He turned, and saw the huge black wolf, as large as a pony, fast upon his heels. It's jaws were agape, it's eyes ablaze with preturnatural savagery, as silently it leaped.

Conan’s sword flashed in a frosty arc, backed with every desperate ounce of iron thew. The massive head of the wolf spun through the air in a spiral of blood, and it’s huge body crashed into him, bearing him down under its weight. For a long while Conan lay there with all the breath knocked out of him. Then he heaved the headless carcass from him with a curse and rose, drenched in gore, scarce able to believe that he still lived.

He stared at the severed head as it shimmered in the moonlight. It was the head of Morwen which now lay there in the grass, her sightless eyes staring up at the nighted sky. At his feet lay her headless body, indistinguishable now from that of a woman, save that along her spine from nape to lower back ran a long thick band of hair, like the pelt of a wolf.

Then the hackles rose on the young Conan’s neck as he witnessed a grisly sight. For the beautiful head of Morwen twisted on the ground, her eyelids fluttered, and her dead eyes glimmered with an eldritch flame.

"No man can slay a Child of Cernunos by the light of the silvery moon," she said. "Oh Conan, stay with me and be my lover! Such pleasures shall be ours. Let us dance together with the horned ones in their secret groves."

Then Conan ran again across that spectral heath, away from the ghastly dolmen on the hill. Behind him Morwen’s hellish laughter rose hauntingly up into the star-strewn sky.

Сегодня пришла с «Амазона» книга Conan the Barbarian: complete collection (https://www.amazon.com/Conan-Barbarian-complete-collection-annotated/dp/1520716966/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1534944003&sr=1-1).

Купил из-за цены, но сейчас, откровенно говоря, жалею: судя по всему, это книга, сделанная по системе «печать по требованию» из набора электронных вариантов книг о Конане. Впервые такое вижу: разный шрифт на страницах, разный кегль, разные поля, нет нумерации страниц.

Заказ сделан 17 июля, а книга отпечатана 23-го. ISBN имеется, как ни странно.

Впрочем, поищем позитивные стороны: если в ней понадобится делать пометки делать, буду черкать без сожаления. :D
