Conan, Adarius and Cara managed to escape the Palace without further trouble. Once out in the streets, which was still occupied by those of less savory backgrounds, the trio ducked into a small alley where the men removed the tabards with the Palace insignia. Adarius rolled them up and tucked it under his arm.

“Wait!” Cara whispered as they were about to set off. They paused, then Conan heard the clicking of claws on cobblestones. Cara crouched and was almost bowled over by Suroth who yipped with joy as she licked Cara’s face. Cara hugged the giant wolf closely, burying her face in the thick scruff. She then held Suroth’s face still and touched noses as they communicated. Suroth shook her head, then tuned to leave, but not before she nosed Conan’s hand and licked it. Then she was lost in the shadows. Cara laughed.

“What?” asked Conan.

“Suroth said you would make a good pack mate. Too bad you are a human. Anyway, she is going to scout ahead for us to make sure the way is clear.”

They emerged on the street without arousing suspicion and continued cautiously. Both Conan and Adarius were propositioned by whores leaning over balconies, wearing thin shawls to protect them from the chill that now filled the air.

“I think it is finally going to rain,” Adarius said as a sudden gust chased scraps of rubbish across the street.

“Karlena said that the mage had spelled the weather for some reason, though she knows not why.” Cara replied.

“Most probably something for that daemon.” Conan muttered as he searched the streets for danger. His neck itched like there was a blade against it. He just knew something would happen.

“Well, at least we will not have to worry about that thing anymore,” Adarius sighed as he cast appreciative glances at the women.

“Cara,” Adarius lowered his voice as he bent his head closer to hers, “when I died....”

“Wait.” Cara exclaimed as she stared off at the distance, “Suroth is in trouble.”

“Where?” Conan asked, loosening his sword in its worn scabbard.

“Three streets over. She is cornered by a squad of soldiers.”

“Lead the way.”
